Maxine Bernstein, founder and director

A devoted advocate for opera and lieder, Ms. Bernstein has lived, performed and taught in New York, London, Paris, Vienna and now San Francisco. Born in London, her life in music began as a soprano, her international musical education culminating in her studies with Christa Ludwig. In recent years, she has mentored and coached extensively, integrating her broad knowledge of vocal development and repertoire with her mentoring and counseling experience. She now utilizes her long-term insights into the training of singers and the presentation of musical artists by directing the teaching and performance organization, LIEDER ALIVE!, which she founded in 2007.

Esther Rayo, soprano

The soprano is most known for her passion for Classical Spanish Repertoire. Her performance experience, however, spans across many genres, including those of Opera, Baroque, Oratorio, Sacred Music and Art Song. Her education includes a Bachelor of Arts with emphasis in Vocal Performance from Sonoma State University (2006) where she studied under David Burnakus and Ruth Ann Swenson, along with a Master of Music with emphasis in Vocal Performance from DePaul University in Chicago, IL (2017), where she debuted the title role of Puccini’s Suor Angelica, to critical acclaim. Recent highlights include collaboration with LaMusArt, a non-profit organization that serves underprivileged Latino youth in East Los Angeles, and her Herbst Theater debut in San Francisco, CA, where she represented Lieder Alive!.

Benjamin Liupaogo, tenor and collaborative pianist

Pacific Islander Samoan San Francisco Bay Area native, the tenor and pianist is a well-versed classical musician. Benjamin has performed throughout a variety of professional companies and organizations in opera, musical theatre, concerts, recitals, chamber ensembles, and choral ensembles. Currently on the faculty at Stanford as Lecturer in Voice, his multi-facedted roles encompasses voice and piano teaching, repetiteur/vocal coach and music director/conductor for musical theatre, opera, and choral performances.
