EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
LIEDER ALIVE!’s Master Vocal Workshops bring together outstanding master artists with highly accomplished emerging and established professional singers for intensive training and performance. Baritone Thomas Hampson inaugurated this unique program in October 2008 with an intensive three-day Master Workshop called Mostly Mahler. The initial season culminated in June 2009 with a three-day program led by mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne. Soprano June Anderson sang a Gala Benefit Concert and taught her workshop, The Art of Singing. Most recently, baritone Håkan Hagegård brought his innovative Singers’ Studio curriculum to the Master Vocal Workshop series for an intensive five-day program, concluding with a public master class.
This program was founded in 2012 with a coaching series led by master coach and pianist John Parr, a member of LIEDER ALIVE!’s Advisory Board and head of music staff at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Germany. In 2014/15, the Institute provided coaching sessions for six singers with Mr. Parr, Alison Pybus (LIEDER ALIVE!’s Advisory Board chair, and former vice president at IMG Artists), and LIEDER ALIVE!’s director, Maxine Bernstein. The Summer Lieder Institute also includes compositional workshops led by Composer-in-Residence Kurt Erickson.
LIEDER ALIVE! has expanded its training programming for singers well beyond the public and private master classes offered by the Vocal Master Workshop series. Bringing Lieder to Life is a collaboration between LIEDER ALIVE!’s director, Maxine Bernstein, and the renowned pianist and Master Coach, Peter Grünberg, Special Musical Assistant to Michael Tilson Thomas at the San Francisco Symphony.
