LIEDER ALIVE! is re-invigorating the teaching, performance and appreciation of German Lieder—a major chapter of western classical music. Such a program, devoted exclusively to this most uniquely expressive and luminous of art forms, is ground-breaking in America.
Those who are dedicated to this important artistic genre—professionals from the United States and around the world—are offered the opportunity to both work intensively with internationally renowned musical artists, and perform this repertoire on a regular basis, in concert as well as in ongoing master classes. Our program offers frequent opportunities to experience Lieder in a chamber environment, performed by highly accomplished emerging and established professional singers and pianists. This intimate relationship of our patrons with our supremely gifted musical artists is keeping Lieder where it belongs—ALIVE!
As one of our most revered singing artists delightfully suggested, our goal is “Changing the world—one Lied at a time...”
LIEDER ALIVE!’s annual Liederabend Series, held at the Noe Valley Ministry, has featured such outstanding artists as Brian Asawa, Kirk Eichelberger, George Fee, Heidi Moss Erickson, John Parr, Kindra Scharich, Simona Snitkovskaya, Katharine Tier, Paul Yarbrough, and the Alexander String Quartet.
Kurt Erickson, our Composer-in-Residence, heads our Neue Lieder Commissioning Program, which began with a five-song cycle by Mr. Erickson written for Heidi Moss Erickson. The program continued with further works for Kindra Scharich, Paul Yarbrough, and Kirk Eichelberger, and in the 2017/18 Season, they are joined by pianist Ronny Michael Greenberg.
Under Mr. Erickson’s direction, our “Neue Lieder Songbook” includes a wealth of original works by Mr. Erickson and other guest Neue Lieder composers.
LIEDER ALIVE! has embarked on a unique collaboration with the award-winning Alexander String Quartet and the acclaimed mezzo-soprano, our Artist-in-Residence Kindra Scharich, on the performance and recording of some of the great orchestral Lieder, transcribed for voice and string quartet by Zakarias Grafilo, the Quartet’s first violinist.

Our international coaching program extends to specially arranged private coaching with Christa Ludwig in Vienna, and Edith Mathis in Salzburg.
Our Lieder Institute, led by Master Coach John Parr, deepens this experience.
